When I set out to write a contemporary romance novel about a professional woman gamer, I thought the world building would be less intensive than my fantasy novels. But like everything in writing, I soon discovered how much research was needed and realized I had to create an entire eco-system of gaming to make it work.

Good Game by Suzanne Lenoir
I’m a gamer, so I have a familiarity with game play. I’ve watched tournaments online, seen interviews with professionals, and watched Twitch streams. But when it came down to the details, I needed to simplify all this so that readers wouldn’t get bored with the minutiae. For example, most professional competitions are four on four for this style of game, but my first beta-readers felt overwhelmed by all the team members. Thus, Siege Encounter is a three on three player event.
I realize this detail will be noticed by gamers, but for the majority of readers, it isn’t important. The environment is there to make everything feel realistic and believable, but the thing I want readers to take away is how the story makes them feel.

If along the way, you start to root for our favorite player — hint: Sam O’Brian — or a certain team, I’m not going to stop you. As a matter of fact, I might have some social media swag for you in a few weeks.
Good Game arrives March 11. I can’t wait for you to read it.
