I’m an aspiring writer of women loving women (wlw) fiction, sometimes referred to as lesfic or queer fiction.
As a teenager, I dreamed of someday authoring a book. Not to make money, or to enjoy accolades of any kind, but to see what I wanted to read. Strong women doing the same things men did, and saving damsels in distress.
When I was 13, I wrote James Bond fanfic with a female lead and a female sidekick – a la Xena only waaaaay earlier. Subtext was there, but the times called for discretion. I only showed the stories to a few close friends because of a bad case of “I’m not good enough.”
Fast forward a few decades, and I sucked up my pride and tried writing again. This time, I reached out to a friend who was published and asked for advice. She recommended I apply for the GCLS Writing Academy, which I did.
Best decision I made in 2020.
The result … my first WIP, “A Talent Within,” a wlw medieval fantasy.
I’m not going to stop there. I’ve got a contemporary romance outlined, and a second book in the Valmora world if readers are interested.
If you are reading this far down the page, thank you for being interested in who I am and why I do this. If you are here because you want to know how to do it for yourself, my suggestion is apply to a good writing program like the one sponsored by GCLS to gain confidence, and then throw all your worries out the window.
You are good enough to write a story. Any story you want to tell. And when you finish it, you can be proud of your accomplishment.
Don’t let anyone else’s opinion keep you from writing.
Regards,
Suzanne
